This ain't your average Bollywood. First let me just say if you have never watched a Bollywood movie before this is the perfect movie to transition into. The sound dubbing is a jai-normous (see what I did there?) improvement from most Bollywood films, the acting isn't uber dramatic, they don't pause the story for big musical numbers (which I never complain about), and the cinematography is beautiful. When can I go to India???
Barfi is the story about... Well... Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor), a speech and hearing impaired individual. The story jumps around in time, but I'm just going to summarize it chronologically. Barfi meets Shruti (Ileana) one day in Darjeeling. He is instantly smitten with her and goes above and beyond to get her attention. Unfortunately Shruti is engaged. But this doesn't stop them. Barfi settles for friendship, but in doing so opens her eyes to a whole different kind of love. Shruti's mom sees that her daughter is falling in love with a deaf and mute, so she talks her out of it. When Barfi comes to ask for Shruti's hand in marriage he is shocked to find Shruti's fiance at their house.
Barfi wishes them the best and tries to go on with his life, but he is in a bit of a funk. That is until his dad ends up in the hospital. Turns out he has kidney failure and needs surgery within the next 2 days. But bad news bears, he surgery costs 7000 rupees. Barfi desperately tries to find the money. He goes to his father's old boss, a wealthy man who has an autistic daughter, Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra), to ask him for a loan. What he doesn't realize is that the man is broke and instead it is Jhilmil who has all the money. So when that option doesn't pan out, Barfi tries to rob a bank. But it's hard to be a crook when you can't hear alarms or people sneaking up behind you. Left with no other options, he decides to kidnap Jhilmil and hold ransom in order to get the money. But when he sneaks into her house she is already gone. It seems someone has beat him to the chase.
That's when he stumbles upon a van. He notices Jhilmil in the back knocked out. He waits until the kidnapper is off getting the ransom money and then steals the van. He captures the attention of Jhilmil and she follows him back to his place. He creates a ransom note, and after spending all day with Jhilmil, he gets the money. He rushes to the hospital but it's too late. His father has already passed. Jhilmil is with him all through the small funeral and then he brings her back home. But Jhilmil doesn't feel at home with her parents. So she sets off to find Barfi.
When Barfi returns home after the funeral, a cop is there to arrest him for kidnapping Jhilmil. While running from the police, yet again, he stumbles upon Jhilmil. The two flee together and escape the police. Jhilmil has an address in her hand of her old nanny. Barfi takes her to the nanny and then tries to leave her there. But she continues to follow him around and like a lost puppy she grows on him. They travel to Calcutta where they find a small apartment and live together. They become quite enamored with each other and are getting along great. That is until Shruti comes back into the picture.
I think I will end the summary there. I know it seems like a lot happened but that's not even to the third act yet. But I will say this. I friggin' loved this money. Don't get me wrong, I do have a soft spot for Bollywood movies (its something about the colors, and rhythms, and classic love stories), but I think this may be my new favorite. It's got action, comedy, drama, plot twists, and of course a very cute and innocent love story (minus all the kidnapping). Starring one of my favorite Indian actors, Kapoor delivered once again. I was a little worried because most Bollywood acting is over the top. And since he couldn't speak I thought it was going to be like bad pantomiming. But it was nothing of the sort. Almost reminded me of an Indian The Artist. They had some great comedic bits in there that were reminiscent (maybe even a homage) to some classic movies. An obvious example would be comparing Kapoor to Donald O'Connor in Singin' in the Rain. And I can't forget to mention an opening chase scene that was like a real life Aladdin. C'mon. You know you want to see this movie.
The only problems I had with it were pretty minor. There is a ongoing quirk between Barfi and Jhilmil where he acts like he is about to hit her. Ummm what? This is not cute and charming. A pull my finger joke. Really? But otherwise I pretty much loved it.

7. Senseless
Well, let's just dive right in. The story begins with Eliott Gast (Jason Behr) getting kidnapped when on a business trip in Europe (I don't think they ever really say what country he is in). When he wakes up he is in a strange room with unbreakable walls and windows. He is left alone in solitude for three days and during these three days he does what any normal person would do after being kidnapped. He exercises. Ummm... what?
I'm sorry but if I ever get kidnapped pretty sure the last thing on my mind would be doing my 8 minute ab routine. I would spend the first day trying to figure out where the hell I was and how I got there. Then after I realized I was too dumb to figure out a plan of escape would probably become morbidly depressed. Then I would grab the heaviest thing I could and wait by the door so once someone opened it, I could attack them right away. But that's just me. And now that you know this I need to change my game plan.
Getting back to the story, when he finally does come in contact with his kidnappers they don't really explain why they have him, other than the fact that all Europeans hate Americans. Oooo... Tangent thought -- When Eliott notices that there are cameras watching his every move he immediately says he's American. Didn't they teach him that when traveling in areas that hate Americans to say your Canadian. Jeezz --. They are broadcasting his every move and asking for money to support there terrorism. I'm sorry, terrorists have bombs, as they say in the film, so they are more like political activists. They activists decide in order to get more money they are going to torture him by slowly getting rid of his senses. The first being taste. Then smell. Then touch and so on and so on. While he is stuck in this room he has flashbacks of his childhood when he stole from a blind child and was beaten up by a gang of hoodlums (more like the rejects from It) for no reason at all.
I think the point of this film was to look at society. What we define entertainment nowadays. Sure, it might not be watching someone brutally tortured but the Kardashians come pretty close sometimes. Also it doesn't matter if you are innocent or just a pawn, you're still going to get beaten up sometime in life. Man, life sucks.
I've never been too impressed with Jason Behr, and it didn't help that once he was kidnapped I was convinced it was because he was an Alien. When was Katherine Heigel going to come on and save him? But he did a decent job. I mean how hard is it really to scream and act like you're in agony? I did enjoy the good 20 minutes after they burned his tongue and you couldn't understand what he was saying. But he showed commitment to his role because I'm pretty sure he lost a few pounds for it. And if he didn't then the make up artist did a pretty decent job. Well... at least on the making him look skinnier bit. There were times when the make up (mostly just his hands) looked like gloves he just pulled over. But otherwise his bloody tongue, hands, nose had this squeamish girl squirming in her seat. If you are a fan of gore this is worth a watch for you. However, I would have enjoyed more a plot with twists and maybe a little bigger struggle to escape.

6. Paper Moon
I know Tatum O'Neal didn't always have the best relationship with her dad Ryan O'Neal, but together in Paper Moon they are just delightful. I don't know if it's the fact that they are real life father daughter or if it's just the writing and acting but they definitely work well together. Good enough for Tatum to be the youngest actor ever to win an academy award. People love a little smart ass.
The story starts with the death of Addie's (Tatum) mother. She doesn't know who her father is and has no family in the area. Moses (Ryan) stops by the funeral to pay his respects. Unfortunately he didn't expect the burden of delivering Addie to her aunt's house in St. Joseph, Missouri. He decides to put her on a train so he won't have to deal with her, but in order to do that he needs money. He pulls off a quick scheme making him $200. Addie though decides that this money belongs to her and starts causing a scene in public until he promises to pay her back. They set out on the road, pulling off a few small cons. But eventually the cons get bigger and Addie plays more a critical role in them. Although they hate each other at first, and neither are sure if Addie is Moses's daughter, the two start to develop an unlikely partnership.
The cinematography is fantastic. They really utilized their locations showing the vast openness of the Midwest. I sometimes wished that the movie would be in color just so you could see those blue skies shining bright over the amber grains. And there is just something about children acting or looking like people that I find adorable. Maybe that's why I think Amish children are just soooo cute. But I knew that I liked Addie he second she started puffing on that cigarette (black and white film plus smoking!! LOVE IT). You just can't get away with that nowadays. Plus it seemed like a majority of he driving (and there is a lot of driving) was actually done on location, with the actors, while they were acting and not green screened. At times I was nervous that Addie was going to fly right out of the car because there were a couple of close calls. And my last quip before I wrap things up. Madeline Kahn plays Ms. Trixie Delight, a dancer who tries to play Moses. I think this is the first movie that I have ever seen her in where you here her real voice. Although this wasn't the comedic roles she is use to playing, she managed to pull it off.

5. South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut
I thought I should watch something a little more mainstream after watching the abortion video, so I settled on South Park. Oh boy. What a difference in movies. I'm not a follower of South Park but having lived with mainly the male gender I have seen my fair share of episodes and thought they were pretty amusing. But I think they should just stay 30 minute episodes.
When the movie started I was entertained and enjoyed the songs and story (even though I feel like I might have been the butt of some of their jokes), but about 30-45 minutes into it I was ready for it to be over. Enough! I get it. I started to get a little bored (and it might be my A.D.D. acting up) but I found myself starting to surf the web and only half paying attention to the movie. Though I did like the songs. I guess I'm just a show tune kind of gal.
The plot of movie musical starts with Stan (by far my favorite with his nervous puking) getting the gang together to go and see the new Terrance and Phillip movie, Asses on Fire. The movie is rated R so after paying a homeless person to buy their tickets, they get in and watch the movie. It's very clear moments into the show why it was rated R. Especially when it got to the song "Uncle Fu*ker" (which is quite catchy). Afterwards, the boys new found potty mouth upsets the town and sets their mothers in a rage where they blame Canada for everything and eventually start a war. They make a citizens arrest for Terrance and Phillip and decide to execute them to set an example. Meanwhile in Hell, the Devil and Saddam Husssein patiently wait for them to be executed so the prophecy can come true an the two can rule over Earth.
I almost feel like this movie was everything that Matt Stone and Trey Parker had ever wanted to say on television but weren't allowed to. And it was fun at first because it was shocking and new, but like I said before it lost its shock value after awhile and I started losing my interest.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days
Holy shiz! 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is a very realistic story about Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and her friend Gabita (Laura Vasiliu). The story takes place in a 1987 Romania when abortions were illegal when, SURPRISE, Gabita ends up pregnant. Otilia being the bestest most loyal friend ever decides to help her get an illegal sma-smortion.
Gabita comes off as a giant f*ck-up. I get that she is all nervous and what not, you know putting not only her life on the line but risking getting caught and going to jail, but honestly get your shit together. It seems like everything she did to prepare for her "procedure" got screwed up. First, she was suppose to book a room at a specific hotel. But that reservation got lost and was never made. So Otilia has to once again clean up her mess and find another room. Then, Gabita wasn't feeling well enough to meet Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), the man giving her an abortion, even though she promised to meet him. Instead she once again sends Otilia. Bebe is PISSED that Gabita didn't meet him in person and is already in a bad mood when he arrives at the hotel to perform the... termination (I'm running out of words for abortion already). When they arrive it turns out that once again Gabita screwed up (this isn't even counting the giant screw up of getting pregnant). She forgot the plastic sheet. O well, here's hoping she doesn't bleed out everywhere. Did I mentioned she lied about how far along she was? This pisses off Bebe even more so he ups his price. But oops, guess who doesn't have that much money? Luckily Bebe is a reasonable man and agrees at a lower price on one condition. Both girls have to have sex with him. I think that is a good spot to stop the synopsis. I don't want to give away all the good parts.
Needless to say this movie IS NOT for everyone. With its bleak production design and realistic lighting, it made me feel a little depressed right away. You knew this story wasn't going to have one of those "and they all lived happily ever after" endings. But the acting was pretty impressive. They have extremely long takes with minimal cutting. It was almost mesmerizing to see Otilia during the dinner scene. Sometimes the best kind of acting is where you do nothing at all.
And as for the whole controversial abortion thing. I just want to put it out there that I am all for a women's right to chose. And this is a good example of why. Do people really think that if they make abortions illegal people will actually stop getting them? If someone really wants an abortion they are going to get one. And they probably won't do it in the safest way possible. If that were to happen I can just see "Take Them to the Cleaners" becoming a factual story (not really I just wanted to link it). So I apologize now if I talked about abortions too much. Wasn't my agenda.
Rating: *** (it would be 4 but I don't know if I would watch it again)

1. Otilia totally broke the fourth wall right before credits started rolling and it freaked me out.
2. I thought they wouldn't showed it. I prayed they wouldn't show it. But secretly I wanted them to show it. Yup, they showed the fetus.

3. The Big Gay Musical
Ahhh yeah. Big Gay Musical. It's exactly what it sounds like. A movie about actors in an off Broadway musical. There really isn't a complicated plot. Basically the two stars of an off Broadway musical, "Adam and Steve: Just the Way God Made Them", try to figure out who they are and problems that they have. The first star Adam/Paul (Daniel Robinson) is trying to fulfill his gay American dream. Find love, get married, have 2.5 kids, and a home in the Hampton's. But after someone tells his almost boyfriend that he is HIV positive, he decides that maybe he should just give up on relationships and become a slut. The other star, Steve/Eddie (Joey Dudding), is new to the New York scene. He is still a virgin and hasn't even broke the news to his parents that he is gay. That is basically the gist of the plot. From there it goes back and forth between the off Broadway production and Paul and Eddie's real lives.
First let me start by saying that Daniel Robinson is soooo hot. It may be because he reminds me of a gay Ryan Hurst from Remember the Titans (Bertier). I don't care if he is gay or not in real life but he should just keep doing whatever it is that he is doing. That being said, pretty sure that all the main actors in this movie prefer the stage over film. The scenes they excelled in were the ones that were the musical parts. Otherwise it felt very fake. I don't know whether it's the writing or the acting but it was flat and over the top. Also, the color correction during the real life scenes seemed off and was bothering me (sorry film student). I almost wish that they just cut all the real scenes out and just had it be the musical. I was much more invested in that. It doesn't help that the real life moments felt like an after school special. Which leads me to my next thought. Is it really that easy for gay men to hook up??? Maybe it's a New York thing. Literally there was a scene were Paul sat down and a guy offered to "suck him off". He didn't even have to do anything!
I realize this review has been very brief, but I feel like I have touched on all the major points. If you enjoy musicals and sexual innuendos, you will definitely be entertained by the musical portions of the movie. But overall, its a low budget film that looks and feels like a low budget film.
On a side note, the beginning of the movie kind of made me feel as if I were a gay man myself so kudos to you, filmmakers!

2. I Do (PrĂȘte-moi ta main)
If there is one thing I love about French movies, it's how much they can get away with just for being French. You can take the Godard approach and have sound randomly cutting in and out throughout the whole movie. Or maybe just the obscure and have happy songs being sung about falling in love with a man who has aids. Or maybe they'll just have their love last forever by being buried alive in a cement pit. It all works in my book. But I Do actually seems to be a very tame French film. In fact, it could have easily been American. I feel foreign films are tricky when it comes to American viewers because a lot of things just get lost in translation. Humor being one of them. But there were times in this movie when I actually did L-O-L (annnnd I'm a loser).
The story is about Luis Costa (Alain Chabat). Luis is the only boy in a house full of women. That's right I said boy. A 43 year old boy. Well, I guess he is more like a man-child. He has all of his five sisters and mother take care of him. Washing his clothes, making his meals, etc. One day his sister decides she has had enough and gets all the other sisters, and mother, on her side. They decide he needs to find a wife so they don't have to take care of him anymore. And thus begins the start of an awkward dating montage. Suddenly he figures out a scam for his family to stop pressuring him to get married so he can continue living the single life. All he needs to do is pay a girl to pretend to be his fiance, plan a wedding, and then get left at the alter.
Ummm... Hello!! Do you know how expensive that plan is going to be?!?! Let alone time consuming. But, whatever it's not my life. Also, how dumb is it to find your brother/son a bride just so you don't have to do his laundry anymore. Wouldn't you be more concerned about him not being lonely in his old age? Whatever. That really is my biggest complaint about the whole movie.
Getting back to the plot. He meets his best friend's sister, Emma (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Emma is a free spirited feminist trying to adopt a baby. She agrees to go along with his scheme in order to get enough money to adopt. Everything is going to according to plan. Luis family loves Emma and can't wait for them to get married. But during the wedding planning with the future in-laws, Emma runs into her adoption agent. Now things get a little confusing when it comes to her adoption paperwork. The wedding finally approaches after roughly thirty minutes into the movie (where is all the build up??). When Emma doesn't show, one of Luis's sister claims it is because he cheated on her. Chaos ensues and Luis's mother ends up having a stroke and when she is in the hospital is only asking for Emma.
Well, shit. Luis devices another plan. This time he brings back Emma, but she turns into a "bitch" and has to get the whole family to hate her. Emma reluctantly agrees and insists to make their plan believable she moves in with him. Let me back track for a moment. The reason that Emma agrees is because of the adoption paperwork. The agent doesn't understand if Emma is getting married or not and says it looks bad for the paperwork. Thus making Emma say that they are getting married once his mother gets better. They move in together and although things are rough at first, they soon seem to get along quite well.
I don't want to go to much further into the story for fear of ruining or setting up the ending too much. After all, it is a French film so it doesn't have to be a happy ending. But I did enjoy watching it. I thought it had very relatable themes. I'm only 24 and have already been feeling the pressure from my family to settle down. Ick. Plus you have the whole traditional woman vs. the feminist character (who is a great female character). They might not of had great chemistry where you wanted to shout at the TV for them to kiss already but it was a more believable less cinematic build up. So I would recommend this movie. Unless you hate reading. Then don't even bother.
