7. Senseless

Well, let's just dive right in. The story begins with Eliott Gast (Jason Behr) getting kidnapped when on a business trip in Europe (I don't think they ever really say what country he is in). When he wakes up he is in a strange room with unbreakable walls and windows. He is left alone in solitude for three days and during these three days he does what any normal person would do after being kidnapped. He exercises. Ummm... what?

I'm sorry but if I ever get kidnapped pretty sure the last thing on my mind would be doing my 8 minute ab routine. I would spend the first day trying to figure out where the hell I was and how I got there. Then after I realized I was too dumb to figure out a plan of escape would probably become morbidly depressed. Then I would grab the heaviest thing I could and wait by the door so once someone opened it, I could attack them right away. But that's just me. And now that you know this I need to change my game plan.

Getting back to the story, when he finally does come in contact with his kidnappers they don't really explain why they have him, other than the fact that all Europeans hate Americans. Oooo... Tangent thought -- When Eliott notices that there are cameras watching his every move he immediately says he's American. Didn't they teach him that when traveling in areas that hate Americans to say your Canadian. Jeezz --. They are broadcasting his every move and asking for money to support there terrorism. I'm sorry, terrorists have bombs, as they say in the film, so they are more like political activists. They activists decide in order to get more money they are going to torture him by slowly getting rid of his senses. The first being taste. Then smell. Then touch and so on and so on. While he is stuck in this room he has flashbacks of his childhood when he stole from a blind child and was beaten up by a gang of hoodlums (more like the rejects from It) for no reason at all.

I think the point of this film was to look at society. What we define entertainment nowadays. Sure, it might not be watching someone brutally tortured but the Kardashians come pretty close sometimes. Also it doesn't matter if you are innocent or just a pawn, you're still going to get beaten up sometime in life. Man, life sucks.

I've never been too impressed with Jason Behr, and it didn't help that once he was kidnapped I was convinced it was because he was an Alien. When was Katherine Heigel going to come on and save him? But he did a decent job. I mean how hard is it really to scream and act like you're in agony? I did enjoy the good 20 minutes after they burned his tongue and you couldn't understand what he was saying. But he showed commitment to his role because I'm pretty sure he lost a few pounds for it. And if he didn't then the make up artist did a pretty decent job. Well... at least on the making him look skinnier bit. There were times when the make up (mostly just his hands) looked like gloves he just pulled over. But otherwise his bloody tongue, hands, nose had this squeamish girl squirming in her seat. If you are a fan of gore this is worth a watch for you. However, I would have enjoyed more a plot with twists and maybe a little bigger struggle to escape.
