67. The Nines

Mmm... Ryan Reynolds.  Best part of the movie.

The movie is told in three parts.  The first part surrounds Gary (Ryan Reynolds), who is a pretty popular actor just had a terrible break up with his girlfriend.  He decides to burn all of her old clothes, but uses too much lighter fluid and accidentally burns down his house.  In the same day, he gets drunk, drives to a hooker, buys and does crack, and then decides something isn't right and he should go to the hospital.  On the way he crashes his car.  He is then put under house arrest and forced to sober up.  That's when he meets his next door neighbor, Sarah (Hope Davis).  They almost have a fling but her baby starts crying and she is forced to go back next door.  He then starts to get spooked.  He hears the word "nine" over and over again through the baby monitor, sees notes written in his hand writing that he doesn't remember, and even sees different versions of himself (like with a beard).  He decides to leave to get some fresh air and in doing so violates his house arrest.  His publicist Margaret (Melissa McCarthy) decides she needs to watch over him and moves in.  The two seem to hit it off.  Sarah seems jealous and tells him that she can help him escape.  Margaret tells him not to trust Sarah because he's a nine.  But he doesn't listen to her and crosses his house arrest line.  The house blows up.

The second part is about Gavin (Reynolds), a writer that is trying to get his pilot sold and on the air.  He wrote a specific part for Melissa McCarthy (McCarthy) who is also one of his best friends.  While he is trying to get his show on the air, a reality crew is creating a show about him.  After they film the pilot, he finds out that the studio wants a different female in the role.  He decides to betray his friendship in an attempt to get his show on the air.

The third part revolves around Gabriel (Reynolds), who is out hiking with his wife Mary (McCarthy) and daughter.  When they get back to car they notice they left the lights on and now the battery is dead.  They try calling for help since they are all alone but their cell phones are not working.  Gabriel decides to go off to try and find a spot where he can get service to call for help and along the way meets Sierra (Davis).

More happens during the second two parts, but I don't know how I could tell you without giving away the ending.  I feel like the movie started out okay because I was intrigued and the acting was good (love McCarthy.  Can we be friends?), but after they set up the mystery in the first part it seemed to go downhill.  I feel like there were holes in the story that were never explained.  If I were to watch this movie again knowing what is going on I would still have questions about why certain things happen.  It didn't seem very consistent.  Also I feel like they blatantly ripped off a very popular computer game's icon.  And I'm a fan of this game, so I don't know what that says about me.
