68. The Grey

Now, let me apologize right away.  Netflix is being a big poop right now so it was really hard to watch this movie because the speed kept changing and the sound sync was continuously getting off.  That being said...

SUCK IT NETFLIX

Okay now I can go on.

Ottway (Liam Neeson) works in Alaska shooting at wolves that threaten the oil workers there.  It's the last day of the job before he returns home and after spending the night in a bar, he leaves with his rifle.  He sticks the rifle in his mouth but he is unable to pull the trigger.  The next day he gets on a plane to go home along with a bunch of the oil workers.  Something is not right about this plane though and it crashes during a blizzard leaving only a handful of survivors.

Ottway immediately seems to take charge after comforting a dying man.  He starts to assign jobs of getting supplies, starting a fire, and finding food to the other survivors.  That night, Ottway thinks he sees a survivor crying for help but when he gets nearer, he realizes that it's a dead body being eaten by a wolf.  The wolf attacks him but he is able to get away.  They decide to take shifts and keep guard for wolves.  During one shift a man is attacked and killed.  His body is found in the morning when Ottway declares that the wolves weren't out to eat him, they were there to kill him.  He concludes that they must be in the wolves territory and should try and find somewhere else to go.  They see a line a trees in the distance and decide to head that direction in an attempt to survive the cold and wolf attacks.

I'm not going to lie.  If I was dying, I would not complain if Liam Neeson was the one calming me down and easing me into death.  What a voice.  I think this movie would have been a lot better if they didn't make the wolves seem like a gang out to get them and more like the wild beasts that they are.  A wolf wouldn't just kill, they would eat to (they aren't wasteful) and if they don't act and think like humans, it makes them seem unpredictable and therefore scarier.  Also, it seemed like they were able to survive a lot before they died.  That bite that Neeson took seemed pretty vicious but he hardly seemed to limp afterwards.  And only one person died of hypothermia.  Considering how cold it can get and what they were left with I feel like more people would have died that way then by the people wolves tracking them.  Also, it seemed to have a fair amount of daylight going on.  It didn't say what season this took place in, but I think it would have been better if more of the movie took place at night.  Then you can get away with fake looking wolves.  Don't get me wrong they did a decent job on them, but unless you use real wolves they are always going to look fake.
