Anna (Felicity Jones) is a British exchange student studying in L.A. When she meets Jacob (Anton Yelchin) she is instantly smitten and, although she doesn't have the courage to approach him, she leaves him a note on his windshield (don't worry, in the nut she says she's not crazy). Jacob gives Anna a call and after a very long coffee date, the two start dating. However, Anna's visa expires once she graduates from school. The night before she is set to go back to the UK they go out on the town. There she decides that she is going to stay the summer. Once the summer passes, she goes home for a wedding. When she flies back to L.A. she is unable to get passed customs. Because she had overstayed with her visa she is banned from the U.S. Distraught she goes back to the UK and gets a job. Jacob starts his own business designing furniture and when he finally saves enough money to go and visit her, they decide it would be easier if they just remain friends.
After a few drinks one night he calls her up and although she tries to keep things friendly she wishes that he would come over right away. He ends up using the tickets that he bought earlier and flies over to see her. While he was there it's as if nothing has changed between them and when asked if either of them have slept with other people, they decide they don't want to know. When they have dinner with her parents, they tell them they should just get married so they don't have to keep fighting her visa ban. This causes some tension between them and when he returns to LA they continue on with their separate lives.
Jacob starts seeing Sam (Jennifer Lawrence), who also works with him. Things seem to be going fine but he still has Anna on his mind. In fact, he even calls her Anna one time. She forgives him but when Anna calls him up and proposes that they should get married because she has never felt like this with anyone else. It doesn't take much to convince him because he just flies right over and they get married at City Hall. Now they just have to wait six months and she will be able to go back to LA.
After six months passes, he flies back to the UK where they have to present their case to immigration. Things get more complicated as they try to override her violation on her student visa. Turns out she is still unable to go back to the US. Annoyed and frustrated the two wander aimlessly through a market. They decide to go home and once there tension is high. Anna sees a text from Sam saying that she misses Jacob. When she asks Jacob if anything is going on he gets angry and having to defend himself and yells at her. Then he asks if she ever slept with her hunky neighbor Simon (Charlie Bewley).
I'm not going to lie (and I shouldn't be ashamed because this is a total chick flick) but I had high expectations for this film. And they almost delivered. The acting was great. They really captured the excitement of puppy love and being in the honeymoon stage of any relationship. Plus they did a great job showing the anguish of being apart. I think you need to credit the writing to that as well. It felt very natural. But even their body language and the blocking helped to emphasis this. However, I feel like the ending got a little long. And it was confusing to know how much time has past. I would get annoyed with them for moving on too quickly, but honestly years could have passed and I would have no idea. The ending was a little ambiguous, but here is what I think it means. Get ready for SPOILERS!!
Here is how it ends. The two separate once again. Jacob starts seeing Sam again and Anna starts seeing Simon. It seems pretty serious with Simon because the two are living together. After she gets a promotion, Simon proposes to her, however she just found out that the paperwork has finally been cleared and she can finally go back to the US. She ends up going back to Jacob after he kicks out Sam, but things seem awkward between the two of them. They take a shower and in it they hug before she leaves him in there. To me, I feel like this was the scene where both characters get closure. It's kind of a tortuous relationship to go through and neither one ever seem to get closure until this final scene. And you can tell something is off because they haven't acted like this around each other the whole movie. But who knows, maybe they are both just in shock that now they can finally be with each other.
