Nathalie (Isabella Blais) is pregnant with her first child. One night while her husband is at work she starts having contractions. She tires calling him but he doesn't pick up his phone and when she calls her friend she is told that it's probably nothing and she should just wait it out. Fearing something is wrong, she calls for a taxi and goes outside to wait.
Henry Welles (Zach Braff) is one busy drug dealer. Late in the night, he is constantly getting calls and meeting with customers all over Quebec. Between deals, he is drinking and having a good time. One night, his phone rings and off he goes to make another deal but it's in unfamiliar area. He turns the wrong way down a one way street and hits Nathalie with his car.
When Nathalie wakes up she is in the hospital. She has suffered from a mild concussion and the doctors want to keep her their overnight. When she asks about her baby she gets some bad news. Not wanting to perform the still born delivery when she is in such a fragile state, they schedule it for a different date. Nathalie's world is shaken and she seems unable to cope with her loss. Meanwhile her husband seems indifferent to the loss and her feelings.
Henry consumed with guilt asks his friend to find out if she was all right. His friend goes around the neighbor trying to be sneaky about finding out about Nathalie but people begin to suspect that he might be part of the hit and run. He tells Henry where she lives and that she seems all right. Henry follows her to a bar and sees her drinking many glasses of wine, along with the other people watching her at the bar. When one woman starts to tell her she should more responsible, being pregnant and drinking and all, Nathalie starts to create and scene. Henry goes over and calms things down. Nathalie and him leave the bar and begin to talk. She tells him that her baby is dead and she is going to have a delivery the next day.
However, the next day comes and she is unable to go through with it. Feeling like she can't talk to her husband because he doesn't understand how she feels and is almost indifferent to the death of their child, she calls up Henry. She ends up staying at his place for a few days and they become friend. Well, maybe even bordering the friend/love interest line.
It's tricky I feel whenever you deal with the death of an infant or child in a movie, but this was done in a way where, yes the audience does feel bad, but they aren't going to be an outrage over the death of a little one. Zach Braff plays a complicated character. At first you hate him and think he is just scum. A drug dealer that hits a pregnant woman and then leaves her there. Why would I even care about what happens to him. But the character is well written and just like Nathalie does, you start to warm up with him. But soon it gets to the point where it's like when is he going to tell her?!?! It has some great dramatic moments between the two of them and I don't have a lot of negative thoughts about the movie. But there just seemed to something missing that made it seem a little flat. I can't put my finger on it though. Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention.
