36. Mad World

I knew this was going to be a treat when they used LiveType for the opening credits.

Will (Dylan Vigus) is the new kid in town.  He is overweight but outgoing and makes friends with a group of misfits right away.  In fact, its this group of misfits that seems to be the only good thing (at least to him) that he has in the world.  Is dad is a drunk that beats him, teachers make fun of him in front of the whole class, and the popular jocks are always beating up on the fat kid.  It's not much better for his friends.  Cory (Gary Cairns) was abandoned and is now homeless.  He sells drugs (or at least I think he sells drugs) and has a crush on the main jocks girlfriend, who is embarrassed to be seen with him.  John (Matthew Thompson) is black but adopted by white parents.  He doesn't really fit in with the other black or white students (is that PC to say?), just the misfits.  Jevon (James Lee Martinec) probably is the most messed up in the group.  Although he is extremely smart and one of the best in the class, he takes acid like its candy, cuts himself, and has a pretty sick relationship with his parents (not by choice).  Things just keep escalating for this group getting worse by the moment.  Finally, Jevon can't take it anymore and he kills himself.  Cory blames Jevon's death on Jevon's parents and murders them.  He then steals all their guns and (SPOILER!! - it was spoiled for me so I feel ok doing this) with help from Cory and Will they shoot up the school.

I read after I watched the film that this is supposedly a dark comedy.  But it doesn't seem funny at all.  I mean I did laugh out loud but usually it was about the poorly written dialogue or poor set design (if anyone has seen the webseries "The Bu" its pretty much like that).  Otherwise I thought it was pretty much a drama (or at least trying to be a drama).  The only part I can think that would make it somewhat of a comedy is when Cory freaks out at his crush when she is with her mom and boyfriend.  But otherwise it wasn't funny.  The film is clearly low budget.  Not only does quality of the movie look pretty bad,and the sound mixing (especially the sound effects) seem funky, but most of the sets were just god awful.  There was one scene in a girls bedroom.  I had no idea it was a girls bedroom though until she said get out of my room.  That's because it was a room with white bare walls, the bed was just a mattress on the floor with white sheets, and next to it was a shitty alarm clock.  That was all that was in the room.  All the school scenes looked like it was shot in someone's apartment building with crappy signs that said school spirit and what not.  The only part that I liked in this movie was a monologue from John about how f*cked up the system is.  All the other scenes involved screaming and fighting but this monologue was calm and close with no movement, just the actor, and I think it was probably the most powerful scene in this movie that didn't constantly had me rolling my eyes.  Geez.  I know I shouldn't get caught up in all the minor things like set design and overlaps (Jesus there were a lot of overlaps) and just pay attention to what the filmmaker was trying to say, but it was really annoying and I didn't start to feel bad for the characters til the end (especially John).  Otherwise I was just annoyed with them the whole time because they never even tried to reach out and tell someone what was really going on.  They just sat and complained and thought no one would take their side anyways.  They had plenty of opportunities to avoid the ending they choice but didn't and due to recent events I was super annoyed with the characters.
