I could have sworn that I had already seen this movie, but honestly I couldn't remember anything about it other than it's about journalists that talk really fast. So I decided to watch it again.
Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) has one stop to make before going to Albany with her fiance Bruce (Ralph Bellamy) so they can get married, and that is at the newspaper that her ex-husband Walter Burns (Cary Grant) works for. When he hears the news of her sudden marriage plans, his jealous side takes over and what starts as a distraction turns into the story of Hildy's career.
Walter sends her to do one more story about a man on death row. She doesn't trust his scheme but can't say no to one last story before she leaves. She gets the scoop (different scoop then her fellow male journalists) and writes the story. But when she hears that Walter has tricked Bruce into being put in jail she gets angry and rips it to shreds.
The story gets better though. Right as she is about to leave the press room. A jail break happens and the man on death row escapes. Chaos everywhere! While this is going on people are being thrown in jail left and right and when she hears that Bruce has ended up in jail once again a man climbs in through the window. It turns out to be the man everyone is looking for. She listens to his story and puts two and two together to find out that he is an innocent man. When the other reporters start to turn up, she hides him in a desk. Now she has to decide what to choose. Her upcoming marriage to Bruce or to stay and write the story of her career and save a man's life.
They just don't make movies like this anymore. The film had three maybe four sets tops and is very dialogue heavy. Although action is happening all around them, you rarely see any of it. Thank God these actors don't get tongue tied because my memory was right and they sure do talk fast. And on top of each other too. It was almost a little hard to keep track of what was going on.
