19. A Little Help

Ummm.  Can I just start this by saying what girl would let themselves go when married to Chris O'Donnell?!?

Laura (Jenna Fischer) just seems like a miserable human.  She works as a dental hygienist at a dentist's office which contains a very annoying parrot squawking in the background.  Her son seems to hate her guts and just wants to hang out with his dad the whole time.  And she is 90% sure that her husband, Bob (Chris O'Donnell) is having an affair.  Then she has a sister and mother who always seem to be bossing her around. Talk about a cherry on top right?

In order to make it through the day she knocks back a couple of beers, but when she gets in an argument with Bob (who makes a comment about how she let herself go - honestly she still looked pretty in my opinion), she can't handle the stress and runs away.  When Bob follows her he collapses.  At the doctor, everything seems to be fine and after an awkwardly answered sexual history question they are free to go home.  Laura promises Bob that she is going to try harder to get her life back on track and decides to make up for their fight earlier by going down on him.  But Bob ends up dying.

Her sister forces her to sue for malpractice, even though Laura doesn't want to because she is afraid it will result in her learning the truth about Bob's "work ethic".  She sends her son to a new school a couple towns away and when children find out that his father passed away, he tells them that he died in 911.  She decides to go along with the story.  To top things off she finds out that her brother-in-law has been in love with her since high school and she think she might have feelings for him too.  Or at least he seems to be the only one understanding how she is feeling at the moment.

The movie doesn't really seem to have much arch to it.  Things start off bad, get worse, get a little better, than a little worse, a little better, and then just ends.  Plus her sister and mom in the movie are soooo annoying.  I have no idea why the brother-in-law married her in the first place.  It's always difficult when making a comedy about life after death and this one just seemed to flat line.  See what I did there.  Ha.  Jokes.
