No judgements, but this movie wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But it wasn't the greatest either. Following the trend of having star packed movies to draw in an audience, What to Expect When You're Expecting follows the lives of four, maybe five, different couples that all go through the ups and downs of finding out their pregnant.
The first couple is Jules (Cameron Diaz) and Evan (Matthew Morrison), who met while competing on a celebrity dance show similar to Dancing with the Stars. Although they recently started hooking up after being paired up with each other, Jules finds out she is pregnant after winning the contest and throwing up in the trophy. The host of the show makes a joke about it saying he hopes she isn't pregos and bam realization hits. First off, what kind of host would even make that joke?! Anyways Jules is a control freak and even though Evan decides to stay with her because they love each other, she won't let him make any decisions about their baby.
Meanwhile Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) and Gary (Ben Falcone) have been trying to have a baby for years. Finally they decide to just relax and take a break but of course the second they stop trying is the moment they get pregnant. They go over to Gary's father's house to tell him the news. Gary's father Ramsey (Dennis Quaid) is a famous Nascar driver and has a trophy wife, Skyler (Brooklyn Decker). Before they can announce the news though, Ramsey tells Wendy and Gary that Skyler is pregnant. Imagine that.
Then you have photographer Holly (Jennifer Lopez) that is married to Alex (Rodrigo Santoro). Holly can't have a baby and they have been trying to adopt for awhile. Finally they get the call but Alex starts getting nervous that he might not be ready to be a father. So Holly sends him to hang out with a group of dads in hopes it will change his mind.
And finally you have food truck owners, Marco (Chance Crawford) and Rosie (Anna Kendrick). They two knew each other in high school when Marco was a player. Five years later they met again and after losing a bet, Rosie is forced into drinks with Marco. One thing leads to another and they have a wham bam thank you ma'am which ends up in a pregnancy. Marco and Rosie try to make it work but after complications Rosie ends up losing the baby.
The movie is shallow and predictable but I think some of the actresses really captured the essence of what I think pregnancy is like. And by actresses I mean Elizabeth Banks. Her and Ben Falcone were probably my favorite couple followed closely by the dad group headed by Chris Rock. Pregnancy is not easy, breezy, beautiful the way that most Hollywood pictures (even this one) depicts it as. So maybe it's because I don't like Cameron Diaz or maybe it's because I had very very very low expectations for this movie but like I said before it wasn't terrible.
