Martine (Olivia Thirlby) goes to California to get help on her art film from a friend of a friend. Helping her do the sound is Peter (John Krasinski), a Foley artist. Although the family seems to have an easy going flow to them, once Martine comes everything seems to change. First, she goes on a date with Peter's assistant, David (Rhys Wakefield), but Kolt (India Ennenga), Peter's step daughter, has a huge crush on David. When she sees David and Martine hooking up, she feels pretty devastated at first. But then decides to turn her attention to her best friend, who isn't exactly her dream boyfriend but at the time he will do.
When Martine gets her first opportunity to direct actors, she finds herself struggling to give direction, which leads to a fight with the actor. Shaken, Martine goes to her room to collect herself and Peter follows to make sure she is okay. He ends up comforting her, but as we've seen in movies hundreds of times comforting lead to some kissing. All of a sudden Peter can't seem to keep his mind off of Martine and they end up hooking up also.
Peter's wife Julie (Rosemarie Dewitt) can tell that her husband is infatuated with their house guest and doesn't like it one bit. At the same time, she is trying to deal with one of her patients that recently had a sex dream about her and now wants to sleep with her. To make things more complicated, Peter is acting like a jealous boyfriend whenever he sees Martine with David.
It's kind of sad but ever since I saw John Krasinski lip sync to Boys 2 Men, he can do no wrong in my book. Not even cheat on his wife with some selfish "artist". She basically told him in the movie that the only reason she slept with him is so he would keep doing great sound work for her. But I think all filmmakers are a little bit selfish. Maybe that's why I gave it up. Nah let's face it, I'm pretty selfish too. Anyways, the movie seemed to try to hard to make a statement. About what I'm not really sure. I just know that I hated the main character. But it did have some cool Foley montages. I've done sound mixing before and it never seemed that exciting. Mostly a lot of hours sitting alone in a dark room with no windows or sound.
