Even though I may work in baseball now, I seem to be surrounded by hockey. And this film came highly recommended with a warning I may not understand all the jokes and/or references in it. However, it came from the same person that introduced me to the name Bobrovsky, which I love to say, so I trust her.
Sean William Scott plays Doug Glatt, a kind hearted dumby bartender. His best friend, Pat (Jay Baruchel - also one of the writers), is a hockey fanatic and even hosts his own public broadcasting TV hockey show. He drags Glatt to a hockey game that's basically a boxing match on ice. When Pat insults the player in the penalty box, the hot head climbs over the glass and approaches Pat but Glatt's protective mama bear like behavior steps between them and knocks the player out (enough where a head butt broke the guy's helmet). After the fight Glatt is recruited by the coach to play for the minor team (?) league.
Although he has weak ankles (something I too suffer from) and is unable to skate well, he earns a spot on the team. He quickly earns the respect of his coach and teammates and is able to move up a level to the Halifax Highlanders. Everything seems to be going right except for the fact his roommate and star player on the team hates him. The hockey world keeps referring to him as the next Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber), the most bad ass goon on the ice. And the finally meet head to head in the last game of the movie (imagine that) to battle it out fist for fist on the ice.
Even though I may not know everything there is to know about hockey, I still enjoyed this movie. I think it's the funniest one I've seen through out this Netflix challenge. It has a great cast and Sean William Scott is just so good at playing extremely dumb characters. And I absolutely loved Liev Schreiber's accent in the movie, I'm not sure why. Maybe I should move to Canada. All in all, I would recommend this movie, I would watch it again, and I might even quote a few lines.
