25. Soapdish

Celeste Talbert (Sally Field) has just won her twelfth daytime Emmy (or something to that effect) for her work on the celebrated soap opera, The Sun Also Sets.  Her costar Montana (Cathy Moriarty) is extremely jealous of Celeste's popularity and plots to get her thrown off the show.  She seduces the producer, David Seton Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.), into going behind the head writer's, Rose (Whoopi Goldberg), back and creating a ridiculous plot in order to get the public to hate Celeste.

They try and arrange for her character to accidentally kill a mute, bipolar, homeless girl played by wannabe actress Lori Craven (Elisabeth Shue).  When they act out the scene all is going according to plan until Celeste sees Lori.  Turns out they are related.  Lori is actually Celeste's niece.  Turns out Lori dropped out of college and moved to New York to be an actress just like her aunt.  At first Celeste is upset about her dropping out of college, but when she realizes that she won't be able to change Lori's mind she invites her to stay at her apartment.

To make things worse, David brings back Jeffery Anderson (Kevin Kline) whose character was killed off the show almost 20 years ago.  Jeffery and Celeste were dating back in the day before she made the producers write him off the show, so their is some bad blood between them.  In order to get under Celeste's skin, he decides to ask Lori on a date.  The two seem to hit it off but when it comes to say goodbye Jeffery only kisses Lori on the forehead.  Celeste, full of jealousy tries to spy on their date and ends up climbing up the fire escape.  However, when she slips and almost falls, Jeffery drags her back inside.  She tells him to stay away from Lori and it's clear that there is still chemistry between these two.

But, like any good soap opera, the twists get even more ridiculous.  When the public ends up loving the beautiful homeless mute, they make her a regular on the show.  And in one scene they write for a kiss to happen between Lori and Jeffery.  When Celeste reads this in the script, she flips out and jumps on Jeffery's back saying that they can never kiss.  Why is this you ask?  Because it turns out Lori isn't her niece but her love child with Jeffery.  This throws everyone's relationship out of whack to the point where they can't work together.  And it comes down to a dramatic live taping of the show where it will be revealed which actor will remain on the show.

The movie has a great cast.  Everyone fit perfectly into their roles.  They were over the top when they needed to be, ridiculous when it called for it, and yet all of them were pretty likable.  It was a little strange with the whole had a date with the daughter thing.  Maybe I just have a soft spot for soap operas.  I think it would just be so much fun to write these horrible plots that could never happen in real life.  And why does it always seem that the most important scenes are always done live.  I feel like this rarely happens.  But whatever, it makes it more interesting.
