In honor of the approaching Arrested Development episodes, I thought it fighting to watch a movie called Kissing Cousins. However, I feel like I've been too nice in these reviews so in an attempt to be meaner, here we go.
Amir (Samrat Chakrabarti) has a pretty easy job in life. He goes around breaking up with people. Not like his own girlfriends, but other people's relationships because apparently there are not enough people with the balls to do it themselves, so he makes a decent living off of this job. But whatever, it works for him because he seems incapable of love. Like literally does not know how to go about getting a girl interested in him for more than a one night stand.
When he learns his friend is getting married to a Buddhist hippie chick (and basically changed his whole way of living), Amir feels left out of the group. Imagine that. A single man who goes around destroying lives feels out of place with his annoying couple friends. Feeling alone and having nothing better to do he decides to go home for Thanksgiving (what a good son). Caught off guard by a family that never sees him, he doesn't have anywhere to stay for the night (they rented his room out to a Chinese girl). He decides to try and stay in the guest bedroom but when he goes and lays down on the bed he is caught off guard by the naked girl in the shower (why didn't she close the door - girls just asking for trouble). Oopsie. Turns out the naked girl is his cousin, Zara (Rebecca Hazelwood). Zara demands an apology but not for him seeing her naked (that's no big deal apparently). She wants an apology for when he kissed her when they were kids.
Anyways to get on with the story, Amir's mother tells him he should drive to Zara to LA before she goes back to England. On the way there they start to get to know each other better and he agrees to let her stay at his place for a few days. When they get back to LA they met up with Amir's friends and when they question the beautiful lady with him, Zara jumps in and says she is his girlfriend. Amir desperate to fit in goes along with the story. Soon he is invited to do all these strange activities he has never heard of before like brunch and farmer's market etc. And now that he fits in and has a girlfriend, his friend asks him to be his best man. No one seems to question the fact that he goes home for a weekend and comes back with a girlfriend that is living with him. Not crazy at all.
Well to make things better, by the time Christmas comes around they are acting like a real couple, minus all the kissing and sex parts. That is until Amir's friend forces them to kiss under the mistletoe. No not kiss. I should say snog since that's what everyone was chanting. After snogging for a bit, they get drunk to try and erase the memory but one thing leads to another and they awake in the same bed. Zara not wearing her dress but thankfully Amir is still wearing his pants so I'm just going to avoid the nausea and say they didn't have sex. Just some heavy petting, which is still gross.
There's more to the movie, but I don't want to give away the cliche ending. The acting was ehhh. Okay. It wasn't good. But it wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen (thank you film school). And it did have some interesting actors in it. Like Jaleel White. Or Zack Ward, who will always be Scut Farkus to me. I think they might have went a little too far with the whole kissing cousins thing. They could have played around with it more making it more awkward for them. Plus there friends are pretty stupid if they couldn't tell something was up. Overall it had potential but was lacking... A lot.
