I thought it was sad that the only Rescuers movie I had seen was The Rescuers Down Under (which I loved growing up) so I figured I should probably see the original.
The movie starts off rather dark I thought (but I was in a hungover state of mind). In the middle of the Bayou trapped on some houseboat in desperate needs of repair, a little girl sneaks out and throws out a message in a bottle. It then goes into a still image montage until the message is received by the Rescue Aid Society (ran by mice. Don't ask me why). Ms. Bianca (Eva Garbor) is probably one of the smartest mice in the society (and probably the only woman) decides to take on the case. However, they decide it's not safe for her to go alone. She decides to take the shy janitor Bernard (Bob Newhart!!).
Together they track down the missing girl, Penny (Michelle Stacy), all the way to Devil's Bayou. There they help her to escape the crazy pawn shop owner, Madame Medusa (Geraldine Page) with help from a few of the other Bayou creatures.
I love old school Disney. They aren't afraid to go a little dark. I feel like you hardly see that in children's movies today. But the voice of Bernard aka Bob Newhart has a special place in my heart. I'm not sure why but I'm going to assume it has to do with my love of Australia... The Rescuers Down Under. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to add a few songs in there.
