35. Funny Games

This whole movie just annoyed me.

Georg (Ulrich Muhe), Anna (Susanne Lothar), and their son go to their secluded lake house.  On the way their they stop outside their friend's house and see him outside.  They ask him a few questions and he gives long pauses before his awkward answers but they suspect nothing of it and continue on their way.  When they get to their house they start to unpack when  arrives Peter (Frank Giering).  He says he is from their neighbors house and was wondering if they could get a few eggs.  Anna gives them to him but he accidentally drops then, then when she goes to give him more he knocks their mobile phone into the sink rendering it useless.

When Peter's friend Paul (Arno Frisch).  That's when the two start playing mind games with Anna.  When she tries to throw them out of the house she refuses.  Thankfully Georg comes back inside to see what all the fuse is about and when Paul becomes rude, Georg slaps him.  Wrong move to make because this just starts a whole other type a game that starts with the breaking of Georg's kneecap.  The family is stunned and it seems like whenever they try to escape it just makes things worse.

I'm not really sure what annoyed me the most in this movie.  The fact that Peter and Paul just seemed to play mind games with them the whole time and didn't seem that threatening.  The main weapon for a majority of the movie was a golf club and they seem to let Anna just walk around to get medicine and what not.  Why wouldn't she try and grab some sort of weapon earlier?  Then there was the fact that Paul was probably about 100 lbs he was so skinny.  And wearing this incredibly short white shorts.  Why would they even wear white in the first place if they planned on hurting/killing people.  Then there were random times when they would break the forth wall.  Please DO NOT wink at me.  Or maybe it was the random scene that didn't go according to plan so they just rewound and did the whole scene over again. WHAT?!  The movie seemed to be on a good pace at first, but then slowed waaaaaaaaaaaaay down.  To the point where I was wondering if it was just a still image with sound over it because nothing was moving.  Don't get me wrong, I am usually a fan of long takes, but this was almost unbearable.  There were times I felt it could have been a lot more suspenseful or maybe even have a few jumps in it but there was really none of that.  The movie had an American remake and I almost wonder if that might be better.  I would usually say no but seeing on how much I didn't like this movie, I might actually like the US one.  It was impressive how little they actually showed when it comes to scary movies.  There wasn't a lot of gore and surprisingly no nudity (except maybe a see through bra at one point).  But overall I didn't enjoy this movie.  Maybe I was just expecting to much of it.  Especially when I saw Ulrich Muhe was in it.
