27. Life of Pi

I regret that I didn't get to see this movie in theatres because it looked beautiful.  Maybe a little fake at times but if you watch in 3D I bet you don't even notice it.  But the colors and the light was great.

Anyways, when a writer gets stuck on a story and is looking for information he is told by a friend to seek out Pi Patel (Irrfan Khan).  After first explaining his name and the fact that he is a Hindu Christian Muslim, he goes into the story of how he survived a shipwreck.  Let me rewind a little.  When he lived in India, his father owned a zoo.  When they decided to move to Canada, they packed up the animals and rode with them on a Japanese shipping boat across the Pacific Ocean.  One night during a storm, something went wrong and the boat sank.

Pi was able to get on a lifeboat just before the boat went under.  But he isn't alone on this boat.  Joining him is a zebra, hyena, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger.  This don't go well at first.  The hyena begins attacking all the other animals until there is only Pi and Bengal tiger named Richard Parker left.  They drift along the Pacific for days and when things start looking bleak, some sort of miracle happens that prolongs his life.  Although his father told him that animals don't have souls, its just your reflection in their eyes, Pi feels a connection with this tiger, and if it wasn't for Richard Parker he would not have survived his voyage.

The movie is almost like a Bollywood Cast Away with a mix of Big Fish (or maybe I'm just crazy), with Richard Parker being a very aggressive Wilson.  Like I said before, the movie was pretty to watch and even though it looked a little fake at times, I can see why it would win or I guess tie for an Oscar.  I was pretty impressed with Suraj Sharma's performance though.  For someone who hasn't been in any major films before to star in an Ang Lee film where he basically performs to a tiger that isn't really there, he did a pretty good job.
