31. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

Teh he.  Bollywood.

A group of friends go to the airport to await the arrival of the rest of their group.  They bring with them a newcomer who one of them hopes to date.  I'm not really sure why at this point in the movie because she seems like an annoying bitch.  She complains that they have terrible singing voices.  She complains that the restaurant/bar they were going to wait at is closed due to security.  She complains about the heat.  And then to top it all off, she goes off on a rant about how stupid love is and how she hates stories.  So what do they do?  They begin to tell a love story about how the two got together.  But in order to tell their love story.  They have to start with another.  And it all starts with a recurring dream.

There is a man dressed in black clothes riding on top of a horse in the desert.  He carries with him a sword and is chasing down another man.  A phone starts ringing and suddenly Jai (Imran Khan) is awoken.  He gets some bad news from his best friend Aditi (Genelia D'Souza).  He goes to comfort her but it is no use.  The doctor comes and tell's them there was nothing he could do.  Later at the memorial service it's revealed that the death was a cat, but Aditi is still devastated.  Therefore Jai tries extra hard to cheer her up (buying her a new cat seems to do the trick).  Later on, Aditi is throwing a graduation party and everyone comes.  And although there is a pain at the party getting on everyone's nerves, especially Aditi (who almost fights him), Jai manages to smooth over the whole situation and gets everyone to dance.  You see, Jai's father died when he was very young.  He was against fighting and his mother told him he would dishonor his father's memory if he ever got in a fight with anyone.

Aditi's parents decide that five years has been long enough and invite Jai over the next day to talk about marrying their daughter.  Jai however thinks he is there to talk about a job.  Needless to say its an awkward conversation.  But when they realize that Jai is after a job and that he has no interest of marrying their daughter (she doesn't have interest either), they bring up the fact that it's going to be hard to find a partner in life since everyone assumes they are together.  With that in mind they come up with a plan to help the other find a girlfriend/boyfriend since they won't come across as a threat than.  Jai meets a girl first.  Meghna (Manjari Phadnis).  Meghna sees the world as a magical place and is always coming up with fantasy stories about everyday objects.  As Jai begins spending more time with Meghna, Aditi starts getting jealous.  When her friend's start to notice, she decides to get set up with a friend of the family's son, Sushant (Ayaz Khan), who is the manly man she has been looking for in a partner.  But in fact he might be too macho.  He gets upset easily and isn't afraid to fight people.

But like any good Indian relationship, they get engaged early on before they really know each other.  Now Jai is starting to feel the pangs of jealousy as he learns about her engagement.  But it's when he sees them kiss that he realizes he is in love with Aditi.  It doesn't help that he realizes Meghna is delusional and doesn't see what's right in front of her eyes.  Now to throw in another twist to the story, it turns out his father wasn't the nonviolent man his mother told him, but part of a ancient family that is known for their brutality.  They even have a tradition saying you aren't really a man until you've 1. Beaten a man 2. Gone to jail and 3.  Ridden a horse (that last doesn't seem to fight much with the others but oh well).

I don't want to give away the ending because everyone should start watching Bollywood films in my opinion, but it was very cute.  Or maybe I just have a crush on Imran Khan (but who wouldn't).  The ensemble cast did well with the story telling scenes which can often come across as annoying show stoppers.  I also thought it was funny how the group telling the story seemed to take their own intermission, made me giggle.  At times it was a little cheesey but that's what Bollywood is all about.  Also, I could be wrong on this, but I thought it funny how the movie seemed to end at an airport and then in I Hate Luv Storys they make fun of the fact that all Bollywood movies seem to have a dramatic ending at an airport.  Ooo boy am I a sucker for cheese.

Rating; ****
