Mike Birbiglia plays Matt Pandamiglio (far stretched I know), a struggling bartender/comedian trying to find his voice. He just moved in with his long time girlfriend Abby (Lauren Ambrose) very reluctantly I might add (picture a man being dragged into the apartment while his fingernails scratch against the floor). Ever since moving in, he has started walking around in his sleep.
After talking to a comedian at the bar he works at (bartending) he is introduced to an agent. With the help of Abby, this agent books him his first gig. Even though he isn't funny and doesn't have much material she figures he will take the bullets for the other comedians. His one gig develops into more as she realizes he has a car and is able to drive around to places. While on the road he starts to develop his own voice and stand up routine (he actually is funny).
However, his personal life continues to decline. Abby wants some sort of a future with this commitment phobe stand up comedian. Although he doesn't want marriage or children or anything of that matter, he ends up getting engaged after his sister's wedding. And instead of prolonging the engagement as long as possible, he sets a date. His sleepwalking has escalated with all of this stress to the point where he jumps out of a second story window. After that he realizes there's probably a few things he should change about his life.
I thought it was really interesting to see his growth as a comedian in relation to his sleep walking and personal life. I could have done without his narration but that's just me. The acting was a bit spotty at times but overall I thought it was enjoyable and it grabbed my attention.
